Belgian Fruit Lambic

Brewed by: Boon Brewery
Country: Belgium
Style: Fruit Lambic
Color: Dark Red

ABV: 4.0%
Cellaring: No
Ratebeer.com rating: 84
BeerAdvocate.com rating: 83

Boon Kriek Lambic is a fruit lambic that pours a dark red with a light pink head. Top fermented with the wild airborne yeasts specific to Belgium's Senne region, real whole cherries are added to the brew maturation process resulting in a well balanced ale with an unforgettable sweet and sour taste.

Strong aromas of cherry, jam, and red wine with notes of oak and malt give way to a flavor profile that charts a similar course. The fruit esters are tart, yet perfectly balanced by soft acidity and fine carbonation --- all leading to a finish that is crisp and dry with just a hint of sweetness and a barely-there ABV of 4.0%.

Food Pairings

This beer is great with chocolate desserts, panna cotta, glazed ham, duck, or venison in a sour cherry sauce.

Brewery Information:

Boon Brewery was founded in 1975 when Frank Boon, seeking to revive interest in a flagging industry, purchased a lambic brewery in Lembeek, a village in the Senne region of Belgium from which, incidentally, the lambic brew style takes its name.

Lambics are a unique Belgian tradition: wheat beers wholly dependent on local, wild airborne yeasts for fermentation with an exceptionally long period of maturation (up to 3 years in oak barrels).

The brewery had been making and blending lambics under various owners before Frank Boon acquired it; cognizant of the weight of the past, he set about making improvements to expand operations for the future, and over the next decades, against the odds he would grow the business into one of the most respected lambic breweries in the world.
