Tradition: Belgian beers which are 7% ABV or above, such as Quadrupels, Tripels, or strong Dubbels, are often called Strong Ales. However, this is a term used by American brewers influenced by the Beer Judge Certification Program. It is not a style name used by Belgian beer drinkers or breweries.
Taste: Because the term Belgian Strong Ale encompasses different styles, these ales vary widely in aroma, appearance and taste. Hop flavor is also variable but is usually low. Overall, it can be said they are medium- to full-bodied ales with high (but often well-hidden) ABV.
