Belgian Pale Ale

Brewed by: De Halve Maan Brewery
Country: Belgium
Style: Belgian Pale Ale
Color: Gold

ABV: 6.0%
Ratebeer.com rating: 49
BeerAdvocate.com rating: 84

Brugse Zot (ABV 6%) from De Halve Maan Brewery pours golden blond with a rich, foamy head and a fruity yet spicy bouquet. It's brewed with pils and other specialty malts, plus aromatic Styrian Golding and Hallertau hops which give the beer its inimitable taste. Crisp and refreshing, the palate is complex, with hints of citrus, and tends toward a certain bitterness. Thanks to refermentation in the bottle, the taste evolves over time.

The official table beer of the city of Bruges, Bruges Zot ("Bruges Fool") is named to cheekily commemorate the antagonistic relationship between the citizens of Bruges and the Emperor Maximilian of Austria, who, on a visit to Bruges in 1488, opined that the town was filled with fools. 11.2 oz capped bottle.

Food Pairings

Fish and shellfish, poultry, desserts with red fruits.

Brewery Information:

Located in Bruges, Belgium, Brouwerij De Halve Maan ("Half Moon Brewery") was founded in 1856 by Leon (also known as Henri I) Maes, and has remained family owned and operated ever since; it is, in fact, one of the very last working family breweries in the Bruges city center.

In the early 1980s the brewery was struggling and Veronique, great-great granddaughter of Henri I, was approached by the mayor, who requested a special ale to commemorate the inauguration of the new statue of Saint Arnold, patron of beer brewers.

Since interest in traditional beer styles was on the rise, Veronique crafted a top fermented, high alcohol ale which became an instant hit, so much so the mayor would require it served at all official town hall receptions.

Today, under the guidance of a sixth generation of the Maes family, the Halve Maan Brewery exports award-winning ales worldwide and is one of the fastest growing breweries in Belgium.

One of my favorites

Drank this when we spent a long weekend in Brugge during the summer. Easily one of the best Belgian Pale Ales that is smooth, crisp and light. I was very happy to find it here.

Great Beer

Was able to drink this in several pubs in Brugge on a visit to Europe. Have missed it since and absolutely love it. Just made an order here and can't wait to get it chilled down. Very refreshing summer blonde.
