When brothers Daniel and David Kleban started Maine Beer Company in 2009, there were only a few dozen breweries in Maine. In Portland, they opened a one-barrel brew house. There, they worked on a single recipe over and over (and over and over) until Spring Peeper Ale (now Peeper) was born. Soon, the Portland location was out of space.
In 2013, they moved to Freeport and opened their new brewery. They perfected other beers and added more fermenters, a warehouse, office and a small tasting room. Soon, they were out of space yet again. In 2018, they completed construction on a larger production facility and transformed the old production space into a larger tasting room. By 2023, with nearly 100 employees, Maine Beer Company ranked as the third largest brewery in the state.
Since their founding, Maine Brewing Company has been part of One Percent for the Planet, giving one percent of its annual sales to environmental nonprofits. In addition to annual giving, employee-directed giving, events and volunteer efforts, the brewery and tasting room use solar power and plan to subsidize solar projects for their nonprofit partners.
