Mont Des Cats (Abbaye Sainte-Marie-du-Mont) is a Trappist Abbey in Godewaersvelde in Northern France, near the Belgian border (French Flanders). The name has nothing to do with cats, but is derived from the name of a Germanic tribe known as Chatti. The abbey was established in 1826 on the site of a earlier monastery which existed from 1650 to 1792.
Mont des Cats cheese has been produced by the monks since 1890 with the milk of local farms. Like other Trappists, they produce a Trappist ale to help support the abbey. Because it's brewed not at Mont des Cats but by the monks of Chimay at Scourmont Abbey, it cannot show the "Authentic Trappist Product" logo.
