Het Anker Brewery in Mechelen began producing "Emperor beer", a brown ale, after World War II. In 1960 it was renamed "Gouden Carolus" (Golden Charles) after Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor (who was raised in Mechelen). Specialty ales in the Gouden Carolus line include two types of Cuvée van de Keizer, brewed once a year on the birthday of the Emperor: a strong pale ale ("Imperial Blond") and a strong dark ale ("Imperial Dark"), plus "Noel", a spiced Christmas ale.
