Belgian Brown Strong Ale

Brewed by: De Dolle Brewers
Country: Belgium
Style: Belgian Strong Ale
Color: Brown

ABV (Alcohol by Volume): 9.0%
Cellaring: Yes
Ratebeer.com rating: 99
BeerAdvocate.com rating: 93

The flagship of De Dolle Brouwers ("The Mad Brewers" in English), Oerbier is a Belgian Strong Ale that pours a hazy brown color with a frothy beige head.

Top fermented and bottle conditioned, aromas include fig, plum, cherry and grape, with notes of vanilla, toffee and caramel.

Taste follows the nose but also includes sour apple and raisin with hints of clove and yeast.

A slight hop bitterness offsets the sweet fruit esters and, together with a lively carbonation, quite effectively masks the 9.0% ABV.

The mouthfeel is full and smooth and the finish is long and dry.

Food Pairings

Great with pate or freshly cooked shrimp. Superb when used in a classic Belgian rabbit stew. This rich Belgian style ale is best with creamy cheeses, chocolate desserts, or as a digestif. Serve at 54 degrees F.

Brewery Information:

Located in Esen, a small town in the West Flanders region of Belgium, the brewery of De Dolle Brouwers ("The Mad Brewers" in English) was founded in 1980 by brothers Kris and Jo Herteleer.

A closed and dilapidated brewery site with nearly 150 years of history came to the attention of the brothers Herteleer, one a medical student and the other an architectural student and award-winning home-brewer. Looking to take a chance and make a change, they purchased and rehabilitated the brewery. Friends and neighbors told them they were crazy to pursue such a venture (perhaps the reason they called themselves The Mad Brewers) but skill and persistence paid off.

Their very first commercial offering, Oerbier, was released to high acclaim both locally and internationally and remains to this day the brewery's flagship ale.

Relying on meticulous attention to quality, a tried and true application of brewer's savvy and innovation, and an irrepressible talent for witty and whimsical promotion, De Dolle Brouwers built (and maintains) a loyal and vocal following and remains a revered and formidably successful producer of the Belgian Strong Ale style with exports worldwide.

A respectable brown ale

I had forgotten about this beer, found it in the back of my refrigerator and was not disappointed. I was expecting a quad so my initial reaction was not very positive but this very strong brown ale has subtle flavors and surprising complexity. If you take the time to sip and enjoy the flavors it is very good. I can easily state that it is the best brown ale I have ever had. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because it has a slight sour taste. It is not nearly as sour as a traditional Belgian sour but enough that I found it distracting; I am not fond of sour beers. Overall this is an excellent brown ale.
