Brewery Information:
In 1992, owner Glenn Benigni opened Fat Head's Saloon in the historic South Side of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It soon grew to be known for its selection of craft beer and large sandwiches, called "headwiches."
In 2009, brewmaster Matt Cole partnered with Benigni to open Fat Head's Brewery & Saloon in North Olmsted, Ohio (a suburb of Cleveland) which supplies beer to the Pittsburgh location. Brewer Matt Cole apprenticed at Baltimore Brewing Company, then worked at Penn Brewery and Great Lakes Brewing Company before joining Rocky River Brewing Company. There, Cole spent more than a decade, winning several awards at both Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup.
Fat Head's Cleveland area location opened on April 7, 2009 with 30 rotating tap handles that serve their own beers as well as guest breweries. Derek Wilson, formerly of Great Lakes Brewing Company, heads the kitchen. In addition to the signature headwiches, a staple at the Pittsburgh Saloon, Wilson added stone oven pizzas, smoke house wings and pulled pork to the menu.
In 2012, Fatheads opened their first production facility in Middleburg Heights, Ohio. Demand quickly exceeded infrastructure, and in 2018, the current brewery was built. It features a 250-person traditional beer hall and restaurant. A second brewpub in Canton, Ohio opened that year as well. It’s satellite operation that serves as both a creative incubator and an additional production brewery.
Fathead’s Brewery emphasizes the use of fresh ingredients and creative brewing techniques and is perhaps best known for their old-world-style German brews, award-winning IPAs and seasonal brews like Bumble Berry Honey Blueberry Ale and Holly Jolly Christmas Ale.
