Belgian Amber Strong Ale

Brewed by: Dubuisson Brewery
Country: Belgium
Style: Belgian Strong Ale
Color: Amber
Cellaring?: Yes

ABV: 12.0%
Ratebeer.com rating: 79
BeerAdvocate.com rating: 87

Introduced in 1933 under the name of "Bush Beer", Scaldis Amber Caractere is one of the oldest specialty beers in Belgium; the recipe has remained unchanged for over 80 years.

Pouring a clear, copper/amber color with a white head, it releases vibrant aromas of ripe fruits including banana, and toasty notes of caramel and toffee. Taste is rich with sweet spice and fruit, balanced with a bit of hop bitterness and some licorice on the finish.

The high density (the proportion of malt) and the active house yeast make for one of the strongest Belgian beers, with an ABV of 12%. As one of Belgium's strongest beers, you may want to cellar it -- it's capable of maturing for years to come!

Food Pairings

Scaldis Amber Caractere pairs well with rich foods, from stews to foie gras, and also works beautifully with desserts like pumpkin pie, chocolate cake, and sticky toffee pudding.

Brewery Information:

The Dubuisson Brewery was founded in 1769 by Joseph Leroy in Pipaix, a hamlet in the Wallonian region of Belgium, as a farm brewery after an imperial decree ending tax exemptions closed aristocratic breweries in the region including the estate where he was employed at the time.

More than a century and a half later, his heirs (through the female line), brothers Alfred and Amedee Dubuisson, decided to cease all commercial farming and concentrate fully on the brewery business.

Today the Dubuisson Brewery, still family owned and operated and one of the oldest and most respected independent breweries in Belgium, exports superior quality ales to at least twenty countries including the USA, Australia, France, Chile, and Vietnam.
