Hopslam Ale (ABV 10%) possesses the most complex hopping schedule in the Bell’s Brewery repertoire. It starts with six different hop varietals added to the brew kettle and culminates with a massive dry-hop addition of Simcoe hops. Selected specifically because of their aromatic qualities, these Pacific Northwest varieties contribute a pungent blend of grapefruit, stone fruit and floral notes. A generous malt bill and a solid dollop of honey provide just enough body to keep the balance in check, resulting in a remarkably drinkable rendition of the Double India Pale Ale style. 12 oz. can.
Brewery Information:
Founded by Larry Bell, Bell’s Brewery is the oldest continuously operating craft brewery in Michigan. In 1983, it began life as the Kalamazoo Brewing Company, a homebrewing supply shop in Kalamazoo, Michigan. In 1985, they started selling their own beer, brewed in a 15-gallon soup kettle. During their first year, they produced 135 barrels. In 1993 they opened an adjacent brewpub, the Eccentric Café.
In 2003, Bell's opened an additional brewing facility in nearby Comstock, Michigan. They legally changed their name in 2006 to Bell's Brewery, reflecting the name by which it was popularly known. A larger production facility in Comstock opened in 2012, increasing the company's brewing capacity to 500,000 barrels per year.
The company opened Upper Hand Brewery in the city of Escanaba in 2014. Initially sold only in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, they began limited distribution in the Lower Peninsula in 2020. In 2021, Larry Bell sold his controlling share of the company to the Japanese Kirin beverage group subsidiary, Lion.
