Tradition: Growing out of the English practice of aging ale, a Winter Warmer is a malty-sweet, strong ale meant to be consumed during cold months. Christmas Ale is a type of winter warmer which is usually heavily spiced. Their primary characteristic is strength, with Warmers ranging from 7% to 10% ABV. Some Christmas ales reach 12% ABV or more.

Taste: Winter Warmers have a big malt presence and are usually dark, but not quite as dark as a Stout. Spices added to Christmas ale may include anise, clove, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and others. Flavors and aromas may include dark fruits (cherries, figs, plums, and raisins), toffee, honey, and brown sugar. For some, cellaring can mellow their complexity.
