Cuvée de Mortagne (ABV 14%) from Brouwerij Alvinne is their Land Van Mortagne (a full-bodied amber Quadrupel) aged for 6 months in oak barrels previously used to mature Pomerol wines from Bordeaux.
It offers an immense complexity due to the tannins of the wooden barrels and the flavor profile of the wine they once contained. Dark red with a tan head, its flavor is sweet and full-bodied, with notes of vanilla, port wine, toffee, and dark fruits. Ratebeer.com rating: 97 (out of 100) 16.9 oz capped bottle.
Brewery Information:
The Alvinne Brewery was begun in 2004 by Davy Spiessens and Glenn Castelein. They were joined by Marc DeKeukeleire who brought his own cultivated yeast strain known as Morpheus, which has a very high alcohol tolerance. They aim to produce world class, innovative beers of mixed fermentation, making creative use of malt, water, hops, and yeast, and then aging their base beers on used oak barrels and/or with fruits, berries, or flowers.
