Whiskey Barrel Stout by Boulevard Brewing in Kansas City is over-the-top but surprisingly approachable.  This twist on the classic style starts with several types of malted barley, rye, oats and wheat.  Robust flavors of vanilla, espresso, whiskey, chocolate and roasted grain are balanced by hints of date and plum, with just enough hops to round it all out.  Roughly one third of the final blend is freshly brewed beer – the rest is aged for up to a year, or more, in both first and second use whiskey casks.

Founded in 1989, Boulevard Brewing Company has grown to become the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest.  Founder, John McDonald, started with a home brewing set up and quickly developed a reputation for making unique and delicious beer on the Boulevard.  Brewing beer shifted from a hobby to a dream of bringing craft brewery to Kansas City for the first time in decades.  Against all odds Boulevard grew rapidly.  The demand and popularity of Pale Ale, Unfiltered Wheat and a few seasonals led to a brewery expansion in 2006.

In 2014 Boulevard  became part of the Duvel-Moortgat family of breweries with more than 150 years of brewing excellence.  Boulevard continues to innovate and expand.  At the 2025 US Open, Boulevard garnered awards for Pale Ale, Boulevard Light, and Plaid Habit.
