Fruited Wit Beer

Brewed by: Brouwerij Huyghe
Country:
Belgium
Style:
Wit

ABV: 3.6%
BeerAdvocate.com rating:
75-84

Floris Fruit Beer Variety Pack contains 1 of each of the following: Kriek, Peche, Framboise, and Apple. The base of each of these beers is a Belgian Wheat ale that is then brewed with the respective fruit.

The Kriek is a Belgian Wheat ale brewed with tart cherry. It pours an attractive ruby, and cherry is prominent to the nose. The sweetness is refreshing, not cloying and the tart balances this out. Rated 75.

The Peche is a Belgian Wheat ale brewed with peaches. It pours a beautiful peach color.  There are bold fruit flavors of peach, apricot and passionfruit. The taste stays balanced and is quite complex and refreshing. This beer is not rated yet.

The Framboise is a Belgian Wheat Ale brewed with raspberry. It pours a deep wine red.  The nose is prominently raspberry but coriander and orange zest come into the mix as well. Taste follows the nose with a sweet raspberry balanced with some tartness. Rated 84.

The Apple is a Belgian Wheat ale brewed with tart green apple. It pours a yellow blond and the nose is green apple and cider. The flavor is delicate, sour and lightly sweet with a soft note of cider and finishes with green fruit. Rated 82

Brewery Information:

Located in the city of Melle in the East Flanders region of Belgium, the Huyghe Brewery was founded in 1906 when Leon Huyghe purchased a local brewery ("Den Appel") whose history in the region went back at least several centuries, to the mid-1600s.

Under his stewardship, the brewery survived both World Wars and actually managed to thrive; but by the 1970s and into the early 1980s sales of the staple brews – then based on lager and Dortmund style beers – were in decline. The brewery found itself – like so many other small family owned breweries of the time – unable to compete successfully with Flanders' larger commercial breweries.

In 1985 the Huyghe Brewery refocused its efforts to concentrate production on high quality, high alcohol, specialty ales only. The flagship brew of this style, Delirium Tremens, was introduced to high acclaim in 1987 and the brewery's fortunes flourished once again.

Today, still helmed by the Huyghe family, the Huyghe Brewery produces and distributes award winning specialty ales to at least eight countries including the United States, Canada, Italy and Japan.
