Style: Scotch Ale/Dark Strong Ale
ABV (Alcohol by Volume): 8.8%
BeerAdvocate.com rating: 86
Some say this is the original Christmas ale; the tradition of Christmas brews started in the 1930’s. It is brewed by John Martin at the Timmermans brewery in Itterbeck, Belgium where the British brewer settled in 1909. This is a high fermentation Scotch ale to accompany Christmas dinners and New Year evenings. Gordon is an intense flavored, full-bodied beer. The aroma is sweet, a bit alcohol forward, and dark fermented fruit. There is a balance between stringent wood notes and sweetness. There is sweetness on the palate and stringency in the throat.
Brewery Information:
The mother ship is the John Martin’s company. The company is family owned and managed currently by grandson Anthony Martin and his two sons Edward and Jonathan. Timmermans has brewed lambic in Itterbeck for the last three hundred years, ever since 1702. A few miles from the center of Brussels, it was then known as “The Mole Brewery.” Owned by Jan Vandermeulen, it was also a farm, an orchard, a café and a malt-house. Elected “World’s Best Sour Beer” at the prestigious World Beer Awards 2015, Timmermans Oude Gueuze can take pride in this recognition of the quality of its lambics.
