Belgian Golden Strong Abbey Tripel

Brewed by: Bosteels Brewery
Country: Belgium
Style: Abbey Tripel

ABV: 8.4%
Ratebeer.com rating: 99
BeerAdvocate.com rating: 95

Karmeliet Tripel (ABV 8.4%) uses a recipe based on one created in the 17th century by the Carmelite monks of Dendermonde. It calls for three types of grain—wheat, oats, and barley. Pours medium gold and clear with a creamy white head; the mix of grains gives a dry, crisp and refreshing flavor, with aromas of citrus and spice. A restrained hop bitterness balances flavors of toffee and malt. 11.2 oz (capped) bottles.

Brewery Information:

The perfect Belgian Tripel

For my taste, Karmeliet is the quintessential Belgian Tripel. Slightly sweet, a little citrusy, and not too dry or bitter. This is one of my go-to Belgian beers, one that I really like to have on-hand as often as possible.

Fresh Karmeliet? YES!

I have traveled to Belgium many times over the years, and there is nothing like a fresh poured draft of Tripel Karmeliet. Bottles that make it here to the US and sit around on shelves in warehouses or at liquor stores usually just taste cardboardy or skunky. Having never seen Karmeliet in a 12oz brown glass bottle (which tends to preserve better) I thought I would give it a chance. Not only was it delicious but the bottling date was only 3 weeks prior! I don't know how BSA managed to pull that off but it was the next best thing to having it on draft at a cafe in Brussels. Cheers!
