Belgian Blond Strong Ale

Brewed by: D'Achouffe Brewery
Country: Belgium
Style: Blonde
Color: Golden

ABV: 8.0%
Ratebeer.com rating: 97
BeerAdvocate.com rating: 94

The first ale of the D'Achouffe Brewery, and its flagship, La Chouffe is a Belgian Blonde Ale whose recipe, the brewers claim, was whispered into their ears by A. Chouffe, the last survivor of a colony of brewing gnomes.

The brew, spiced with coriander and bottle conditioned, is a sunny pale gold color with a thick white head.

Aromas of citrus, caramel, mango and banana give rise to a more complex flavor profile as the sweet and citrus are balanced by earthy yeast and subtle hop bitterness. The finish is silky and dry and conceals a heady 8.0% ABV.

Brewery Information:

Named for Achouffe, the village where it began or (depending on the storyteller) for a colony of beer-brewing gnomes reputed to have once lived in the area, the D'Achouffe Brewery was founded in the late 1970s by brothers-in-law Pierre Gobron and Chris Bauweraerts, first as a hobby, and then as a full time venture.

Nestled in the green hills of the Belgian Ardennes, the brewery released its first ale to high acclaim in 1982 and has flourished ever since. A meticulous attention to quality, a tried and true application of brewer's savvy and innovation, and an irrepressible talent for promotion (the popular gnomes appear on every label) helped propel the brewery to its current success.

Today D'Achouffe (acquired by the Duvel Moortgat brewery group in 2006) exports award-winning ales to over 40 countries around the world and hosts more than 10,000 thirsty brewery visitors each year.

30 years of LaChouffe

Still my favorite and consistently the same fermentation in the bottle quality. When it changed owners I thought I detected a slight variation and then became mass marketed I kept waiting for a drop off in flavor. Without being in Achouffe (or Houffalize where I first tried it) I think it's near to that original aroma and flavor.

La Chouffe Blonde Ale

I found this ale while traveling in Europe. I always have a beer of the day on our outings and this is my all time favorite.

30 years of blonde ale

I first had LaChouffe in 1992 in Houffalize and then was at the brewery in Achouffe in 1994. I am hooked. For years it came only in a corked liter bottle then in the capped liter bottle. I order from your place because its the only place that keeps the liter bottle in stock. Locally it's now in the 10.2 ounce bottles - not quite the same. The flavor might have moved a bit over 30 years; I don't know if the alcohol content and yeast in the bottle is identical to the original ale. Seems reduced but it's still my standard for blonde ales. Use the right glass, don't overchill it and enjoy the evening.

25th Year

First had LaChouffe in Houffalize when the bottle label was painted and the brewery at Achouffe was a converted barn with a club in the basement. I thought it had a very fresh 'meadlow' aroma; the locals said it was that downhill from the barn aroma That flavor comes from coriander. Either way I've been hooked ever since. Like most beers that become more widely distributed I suspect it has lost a bit of it's original flavor in the 11.2 ounce bottle but seems to be retained better in the 25.4 ounce bottle. It is bottled with a bit of yeast that may cloud the bottle if not settled. Enjoy, do not over-chill, and beware the alcohol content.

Love La Chauffe! They have other brands which need to be offered as well. Shipping was quick and packaging was amazing.
