Paulaner Salvator Double-Bock (ABV 7.9%) is the father of all Doppelbock beers. Paulaner monks invented this unfiltered bottom-fermented beer, and, for nearly 400 years, it has been brewed according to their original recipe. It pours a slightly hazy deep amber with a modest, but persistent, caramel-colored head. The aroma features dark bread, molasses and vanilla notes. The taste is unmistakable, with its smooth chocolate flavor, robust dark caramel maltiness and a light note of hops, providing a nice intensity on the palate. It’s the classic German Doppelbock! 11.2 oz. bottle.

Brewery Information:Paulaner was established in 1634 in Munich, Germany by the Paulaner Order of mendicant friars. In 1751, elector Maximilian III Joseph officially allowed the friars to serve their beer to the public on the day celebrating the father of their order, Francis of Paola: April 2. Back then, the beer was called St. Vater Bier ("fathers saint beer") and, over time, it became known as Salvator. As a show of gratitude, every year the friars invited the Bavarian Electors to enjoy the first sip at the start of their annual celebration. It is a ritual that still takes place today when the head of the Paulaner Brewery hands the first one-liter measure of Salvator to the Bavarian minister president at the kick-off of the Munich Starkbierfest (“strong beer festival”).

In 1780 the brewery was granted an unrestricted license to serve its beer. During World War II, large parts of the brewery were destroyed by bombs. Reconstruction lasted until 1950. In 1979 the Schörghuber family took over the majority of Paulaner Brewery, and the entrepreneurial family maintains that majority to this day.
