Oak-Aged Belgian Sour Pale Ale

Brewed by: De Brabandere Brewery
Country: Belgium
Style: Sour / Wild Ale
Color: Gold

ABV: 7.3%
Ratebeer.com rating:
96
BeerAdvocate.com rating:
91

Petrus Aged Pale (ABV 7.3%) has been selected several times as the best wood-aged pale ale in the world. Its refreshing sour taste and clean aroma is due to an unprecedented maturation time of 18 months in oak foeders. The brew pours a golden blonde color with a moderate white head. With sharp aromas of white wine, vinegar and fruit and brut-like champagne-like mouthfeel, Petrus Aged Pale delivers flavors of ripe green apple, flint and lemon zest. The finish is dry and sour, with a slight sweetness and sharp carbonation. Unavailable commercially before 2001, Petrus Aged Pale remains the "mother beer" De Brabandere Brewery uses in various quantities to blend with its other Petrus brand ales.

Food Pairings:

Smoked, pickled or marinated fish (trout, herrings, sardines), shellfish, squid; salads or peppery style cheeses such as Monterey or Pepper Jack and pungent cheeses such as Gargonzola and Limburger.

Brewery Information:

De Brabandere Brewery was founded by Adolphe De Brabandere in 1894 as a farm brewery in Bavikhove in the West Flanders region of Belgium. The early years saw the brewery selling mainly table beers and drafts to local clients and cafes, but by 1950, De Brabandere had built much wider distrubution due to the appeal of their flavorful brews.

In the 1970s, the brewery introduced the beer that would launch a brand and become its flagship, Petrus Oud Bruin, a sour ale whose brew process included years aging in oak barrels.

Passed from father to son, today, a fifth generation still oversees daily operations, and the company remains one of the largest independent breweries in Belgium.
